E.W. Tompkins Plumbing:

A clogged garbage disposal is one of the most common problems people have in their kitchens. Over the years, all sorts of things can fall in and cause a clog. The unit might be jammed with a spoon or another piece of flatware. However, if you follow a few simple safety steps, you could easily save yourself some money. Take care when looking at a jammed unit. Does your unit have a reset button ? Shut off the power to the unit at your electrical box. If you can unplug it, do that. Take a flashlight and see if you can see the offending object. Take and ALLEN WRENCH and loosen the unit on the bottom. Do not losen the bolt in the center at the sink drain.
How to Fix a Garbage Disposer that Won’t Switch On There are some really simple reasons why your garbage disposal won’t turn on. For instance:
It could be the plug has come away from the socket under the sink, so check that first. If the power in your kitchen has gone off, check the circuit breaker. Many garbage disposers have reset buttons which are there for your safety, and to help stop your disposer from becoming damaged. Try pressing that to see if it solves the problem. You might have an object down your disposer that’s caused the power to trip.
