Garbage Disposal No No

Many customers like having a garbage disposal.  Some never have or never want to .  For those who do have them, its important to know what you should never put down them.  For those interested in installing one, please read on.

In the morning after brewing coffee avoid putting the coffee grounds down the drain.  Coffee grounds can get studk inside the trip and they will settle low in your plumbing system.  Try to pitch them into a garbage container instead.

Rice and pasta present another problem.  Our E.W. Tompkins drain cleaners often go out to restaurants because they throw rice into their system!   Rice and pasta absorb water when they are submerged and they will clog your dispoasl and trap and cause you a clog over time.

Egg shells should be placed in the garbage also.  The membrain inside the egg shell can collect on the disposal blade and cause havoc.  Have you thought about composing them ?  That is the better option.  

Chicken and other bones are hard.  They can get lodged in  your system or they can be tough on the disposal blades.  Pitch them in the garbage.

Fiberous vegetables like asparagus and celery are wonderful options for your diet but not for your disposal.  Another thing to go into the garbage can. 

Hard round objects like nuts, nut shells, olive pits can  get caught and create a clog.

We have spoken a lot about pipe health and how one should never put grease or oil down the drain.  Food scraps will attach to the grease and cause you big expensive issues.  We always suggest keeping some empty tin cans to college grease in and then throw it out.
